14. The Five Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate

Between busy schedules and long days, expressing love can fall by the wayside. We forget to compliment, to give gifts ‘just because,’ to linger in our embrace. The things that say ‘I love you’ seem to either not get said or not get through. This is a book about saying it and hearing it clearly. No gimmicks. No psychoanalyzing. Just learning to express love in your spouse’s language. The 5 Love Languages has transformed countless relationships.

There goes my simple list of gift ideas. You can combine 2 or 3 items above if you prefer. For example, I like 6 and 7 together. Combining the 2 sets looks like I have a theme for my gift. Then I can add a card that will fit my theme as well. Or I can add the no. 13, the book seems fine with my theme.

Another combination I would choose to give is no. 8 and 14. I like 8 because it is already a set so I just want to add a book and of course, a Valentine’s card. Or you can simply add a bottle of wine and that’s it.

You can make many combinations just from the items above plus a bottle of wine or a bouquet of fresh flowers or a card or chocolates! So many options in just few items!

As for me, I am okay with a bouquet of flowers and a Valentine’s card. I know…I know! Just the basic old me! ?

If you already read the book (item no. 14),  The Five Love Languages: How To Express Heartfelt Commitment To Your Mate, one of the 5 languages is ‘receiving gifts’. Obviously, that is not my primary love language! According to my profile score, (you can get it at the end of the book) I am bilingual because I’ve got equal points for two love languages. My two primary love languages are ‘words of affirmation’ and ‘quality time’ which I think is totally correct. Take note also that ‘receiving gifts’ is my lowest point. Well, it’s just me! But of course, I still love receiving gifts once in a while. It’s just that it is not my primary love language. ?

Do you know yours? Your husband’s love language? Are you and your spouse/partner speaking the same language?

I would like to share an excerpt from the book:

‘He sends you flowers when what you really want is time to talk. She gives you a hug when what you really need is a home-cooked meal. The problem isn’t your love – it’s your love language!’

‘What speaks volume to you may be meaningless to your spouse. But here, at last, is the key to understanding each other’s unique needs. Apply the right principles, learn the right language and soon you’ll know the profound satisfaction and joy of being able to express your love and feeling truly loved in return.’

It is important to know our own love language as well as our spouse or partner’s. Read the book, if you still haven’t. It might answer some of your questions.

Anyway, whatever it is that you are about to give or receive, just be grateful that you are with your loved ones. I wish you all the love that you deserve.
